I'm Pratima Reddy from Bombay, I studied at Lamar university. I studied at the EE department. Lamar is an average university. Some of the departments are good. Funding is available at this university. If funding is a constraint for you then consider Lamar. The university is in Beaumont which is a small town close to Houston.
You have to write the usual GRE and TOEFL exams. I got my visa at the Mumbai consulate. there were hardly any questions asked. The only questions were about funding and about my family background. You have to land at Houston (which is the nearest airport) by immigration law. You cannot land anywhere else when you are getting here.
Lot of funding is available. This is one of the main reasons why students choose Lamar. I had full aid. In fact I was deciding between Syracuse university and Lamar but Syracuse was way too expensive.
Study experience was good. I had some good profs. Education in the US is very different from India. there is greater emphasis on research and self learning. You have to build a good relationship with your professor who will be your mentor. Once that is done everything will fall in place.
I lived off campus with friends.
There are no campus placements available at Lamar.
