I have already been here for 2 years now, I like the place it's quiet, beautiful away from city. My PhD Program keeps me busy throughout, whenever I have time I watch movies, listen to music etc. Incoming students should get in touch with fellow seniors to know more about the department, courses, speak to professors about research interests etc.Life here is busy but having a timetable helps sooth things out a bit.
Based on my masters degree from IIT Kanpur, my recommendations, grades it was fairly easy to get through Visa process was easy, no major hassles and I travelled by Indian Airlines to Newyork and then took a bus. Flight was long but it was a enjoyable experience.
I am funded by the university so it's good for me.
Courses here are project oriented, focus on practical learning and are based on cumulative performance throughout the semester rather than focusing on one single aspect which gives students ample opportunities to perform. School facilities are obviously very good no comparison of any sort, lecturers and tutors are all good and ready to help with anything in their scope.
I have my sister living in newyork so mostly I spend my weekends, holidays either at her place or other relatives. I do go out once in awhile to have drinks, dance etc. Student union is very active and I participate in almost all activities. My rent is around 300$ and car expenses add up to around 100$.
I have not tried nor interested in finding jobs at this point as I want to get into academia, but placements were good till the time recession struck.I will be definitely be in touch with my fellow alumni.
