The only tip (when you are applying in USA) that I can give is that if you are not offered an assistantship/fellowship at first, write to the professor again, and keep writing and telling them how interested you are. Eventually, they MAY yield, which is what happened for me. All the best !

I had to give my GRE and TOEFL. GRE requires about 15 days rigorous studying, and TOEFL requires nothing if you have been to an English Medium school. A visa is required. Interview was really smooth. It helps if you have funding from the University. I flew in KLM. I did not get any student fare, and I don’t know if they have one. They definitely don’t have extra baggage allowance options. KLM is THE best airline I have flown on to date. Excellent experience. And, getting to Minneapolis was really easy. Shorter journey durations, and comfortable seats and very polite hosts in the aircraft. I landed at Amsterdam first, where I had to wait for 4 hours until the next flight to Minneapolis. Baggage was checked in throughout, starting at the Delhi airport, and I collected it at the Minneapolis Airport. So, no issues. No immigration issues. There are student groups that offer to pick you up at the airport (I availed of that offer), and also provide temporary housing.

I got half time assistantship, which means that the tuition fee is paid in totality, and I get a monthly stipend in return for the duties of a Teaching Assistant/Research Assistant. Fellowships, Half time assistantships and some more slabs (25%, 10%, etc.) You need to check the University website for this information. International students are always considered on equal footing for scholarships/assistantships.

Each University has different laws and rules for part-time jobs, and I am not aware of them yet. Yes there are several Intl societies for all nationalities.

The college does have a placement cell. Jobs are aplenty. Academics, Corporate, World Organizations, Government, NGOs, etc. The alumni network is okay and can be very helpful at times.
